Navy Enlisted Man Recounts His 20 Years of Duty Assignments
Here is an email I recently got from GMC (SW/SCW) Peter M. Michelson (Pincus Mendel) that I want to share with you. He has been in the Navy for 20 years and seven months, in 74 different countries, and in a wide variety of commands. This recounting of his different duty assignments gives an interesting perspective on the life of a Navy enlisted man.
I am a Chief Petty Officer (CPO) active duty. My rating is Gunners Mate Guns. My Naval Educational Codes or NECs are 9536 OM Level Weapons Maintenance for all Naval Special Warfare Small Arms (NSW) Armorer. I am also a 9525 Ammunition Administrator responsible for managing all types of ordnance. I am also a 0812 U.S. Navy Small Arms Instructor.
While on the USS Caron DD-970 from July 1991 to Dec 1993 I earned my Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist Pin (ESWS) and also was advanced to Second Class Petty Officer.
On our 1992 Red Sea Mediterranean cruise I first had the honor of meeting the fine naval Captain Irving Elson (chaplain/rabbi) — 110% true mensch.
From 1994 to 1996 I served on board PRECOM USS CHINOOK PC-9; 1996 to 1998 Combat Camera Atlantic; 1998 to 2002 Amphibious Construction Battalion, Two Little Creek, VA, where I earned my Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist Pin (SCW) and advanced to First Class Petty Officer.
From August 2002 to September 2005 PRECOM and Commissioning Crew for the first ever Naval Special Warfare Logistics Support Unit One for the West Coast in San Diego. From October 2005 to October 2008 Naval Coastal Warfare Group One Imperial Beach, CA.
Selected in August of 2006 and advanced to Chief Petty Officer Sept. 21, 2006. From October 2008 to May 2009 back to LOGSU1.
Twenty years and 74 countries is quite an accomplishment. There’s more than enough there for all the yarns one could ever want to tell the children and grand children.
