Pillow Expert
My name is Dr. Terry Soft. Actually my name is Terry Soft, Ph.D., but Dr. Terry Soft sounds a great deal more impressive. I did my dissertation on the subject of pillows. I have been obsessed with pillows ever since I was a toddler and carried my pillow with me all day.
I am self-employed as a sleep counselor in New York City. My clients are those people who have sleep disorders of one kind or another.
Remember, pillows are closest to our heart each night when we are asleep. Much has been said about having the proper mattress on which to sleep in order to wake up feeling fresh and ready to go to work. But where does the right pillow for you come in?
After three years of counseling, it is my well-founded theory that many people choose a Tempur-Pedic pillow to have the best night’s sleep. A Tempur-Pedic pillow molds to your neck’s pressure so that your head is not in conflict with the rest of your body.
Movies have been made with the word pillow in the title. Perhaps the most famous is the 1959 movie “Pillow Talk” that starred Doris Day and Rock Hudson. It was that movie that started these two actors on a run of several successful movies in which the two of them were featured.
I inquire of my patients if they use one or two pillows. The majority of them just use one, and they prefer rubber pillows with a pillow cover that has a zipper enclosure. The reason for the rubber pillow is that many people have allergies affected by feather pillows.
Many families use a multitude of decorative pillows on top of the bedspread. This is fine except when removed at night it becomes a problem as to where to place them.
My patients tell me that they also place pillows under their back when sleeping to relieve back and shoulder pain. Also, sex journals often recommend placing pillows under the female’s buttocks when trying to conceive.
My patients take their personal pillows when vacationing because of allergies to hotel and cruise ship bedding. A great invention was the small neck pillow for airline travelers to use when attempting to sleep on airlines.
My next research project on pillows will be ascertaining the average amount of time that pillow talk occurs before a couple switches to a more strenuous bed activity (something not seen in the Doris Day-Rock Hudson movies).
